How does AcceleDent work?

Have you ever wondered how your orthodontist can get teeth to move through bones to create a new smile? Well, when force is applied to your teeth, it causes bone cells to mobilize around the root of the tooth, allowing it to move through the bone. Your braces create a force strong enough to move your teeth into position with each adjustment.

To help your teeth move faster, Dr. Campbell has introduced a new orthodontic appliance called AcceleDent to work with your treatment plan. Stimulating the roots of your teeth with a gentle force, AcceleDent works with your braces to speed up your treatment time.

For approximately 20 minutes, lightly hold AcceleDent between your teeth while it pulses. This vibration encourages the movement of your teeth through the bone, creating a better, faster patient experience.

Exciting News for Campbell Orthodontics

In a few short weeks, we will be welcoming Dr. Thomas Covington to the Campbell Orthodontics team. Together, we will continue to provide outstanding treatment results and exceptional care to all our patients!

Dr. Covington is excited to be part of the Campbell Orthodontics family. He joins the team in May 2015 upon graduating from the University of North Carolina where he completed his undergraduate and graduate education.

Dr. Covington is a North Carolina coast native and was raised on Topsail Island. Throughout school, he was a top student. He was the 2011 UNC School of Dentistry Hinman Scholar, received the Alpha Omega award, and even graduated first in his dental school class. He remained at UNC for his specialty training in Orthodontics where he received the Andrew M. Brooks Fellowship. Currently, he is a member of the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists.

When he isn’t practicing orthodontics, Dr. Covington loves spending time with his wife, Laura, and two beautiful children: a son, Carr, and a daughter, Ella. He enjoys fishing, surfing, golfing, cheering for the Tar Heels, and spending time outdoors with his friends and family.

We look forward to this exciting opportunity to expand our services and hours at both our Doctors Circle and Porters Neck locations.

Meet Dr. Campbell

Meet Dr Campbell of Campbell Orthodontics

1        When did you first decide to become an orthodontist?
I first decided to become an orthodontist in high school when I myself had braces.  My orthodontist “planted a seed” in my head that orthodontics was something I may want to pursue.

2        What is the best part of your day?
The best part of my day is then morning time when I am putting on full sets of braces.  It is challenging to put the braces on in the exact right spot and makes me feel like I am setting the foundation for a great orthodontic case.

3        Did you wear braces growing up? If yes, describe your experience.
I did wear braces for about 28 months.  I had an impacted canine in my palate (which is something I see every day in my practice now) that needed to be surgically uncovered so that the orthodontist could move it to the proper position.

4        What is your favorite movie of all time and why?
My favorite movie of all time is probably Star Wars: Episode V, the Empire Strikes Back…I don’t think I can explain why I like it so much, I just do!  I’ve probably seen it 50 times or so!

5        Do you have any pets?
My family has a small dog…a miniature dachshund.  He is black and tan and his name is Leroy.

6        What is your favorite hobby?
I have two favorite hobbies:  golf and snow skiing.

7        Give us three words to describe your family.
Three words to describe my family… hmmmmm:    “Small but smiling!”

8        Would you share a random fact about yourself?
I stopped wearing a watch about 6 months ago…now I always find myself asking my wife what time it is.

9        Name something about the William H Craig Race for Life that people should know.
The William H. Craig Race for Life is a fun, low-key, family friendly 5k run that is great for first timers and seasoned runners.

10     What is your favorite spot in Wilmington to visit?
I would probably have to say that my current favorite spot (and most frequently visited) is the Cheer Infinity cheer gym.  My daughter has really taken to competitive cheering and, because of that, I find myself there often!

Eating with Braces

For most situations, common sense will tell you which foods you should try to resist. Hard foods, sticky foods and foods that are high in sugar should be avoided. While the bonding agent we use is very strong, hard foods tend to break or damage the wires and brackets. Sticky foods can easily get caught in between your brackets and wires.  Finally, while we know that chocolate glazed doughnut is calling your name, you should minimize sugary foods since they cause tooth decay and other related problems.

Here are a few more suggestions when it comes to eating with braces.
  • Try taking smaller bites.
  • Limit the consumption of soda and sugary drinks.
  • Before eating corn, try cutting it off of the cob.
  • Avoid chewing ice which tends to break brackets.
  • Avoid biting on pen caps and pencils.
  • Avoid chewing your fingernails.
We hope this simple list helps you to properly plan what to eat and not eat when in orthodontic treatment.
