Eating with Braces

For most situations, common sense will tell you which foods you should try to resist. Hard foods, sticky foods and foods that are high in sugar should be avoided. While the bonding agent we use is very strong, hard foods tend to break or damage the wires and brackets. Sticky foods can easily get caught in between your brackets and wires.  Finally, while we know that chocolate glazed doughnut is calling your name, you should minimize sugary foods since they cause tooth decay and other related problems.

Here are a few more suggestions when it comes to eating with braces.
  • Try taking smaller bites.
  • Limit the consumption of soda and sugary drinks.
  • Before eating corn, try cutting it off of the cob.
  • Avoid chewing ice which tends to break brackets.
  • Avoid biting on pen caps and pencils.
  • Avoid chewing your fingernails.
We hope this simple list helps you to properly plan what to eat and not eat when in orthodontic treatment.

Over 20 Wilmington Children Receive a FREE Smile!

At Campbell Orthodontics, we see firsthand on a daily basis how a new smile can change the attitude and life of a child.  It is a remarkable transformation that increases self-confidence and inspires hope for many individuals at an important time in their life...their youth.  After witnessing this transformation countless times, Dr. Campbell decided to start the Wilmington and Tri-County chapter of the nationally known non-profit, Smile for a Lifetime.  Since it's inception in 2010, over 20 children in need from our community have received the gift of FREE orthodontic treatment through the Smile for a Lifetime orthodontic scholarships.

Do you know someone struggling financially who is in need of orthodontic treatment?  Simply visit our website at www.campbellsmiles.com and click on the Smile for a Lifetime link on the homepage.  This will take you to the Smile for a Lifetime requirements and application.  Our Board of Directors meets twice a year (April and October) to select recipients and looks forward to awarding another child in need with the gift of a new smile!

April is National Facial Protection Month

When do you need a mouth guard?
Any time you participate in sports!
Let's work together to protect that smile of yours.  Just by wearing a mouth guard, you reduce the risk of knocking out teeth or breaking your jaw.  Any time you're engaged in an activity where your face can come in contact with something hard-say another player, a ball, the pavement, or any hard object-it's a time that you should be wearing a mouth guard!  Mouth guards are a smart investment in your dental health.  If you currently are enrolled in sports and do not have a mouth guard, we would be happy to supply you with one.  Just ask us about mouth guards at your next appointment!  We want to do all we can to help you protect that great smile!

Why Age 7 is the Right Time to See an Orthodontist.

While your child's teeth might appear to be straight, there may actually be a problem that needs to be evaluated by an orthodontist.  If you recognize any of the following issues with your child, please schedule a check-up with our office.  It may be one of the most important actions you can take to ensure your child's healthy and happy smile.
  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Jaws that shift or make sounds
  • Speech difficulties
  • Biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth
  • Facial imbalance
  • Grinding or clenching of the teeth
  • Thumb or finger sucking

Dr. Campbell, A Specialist in Orthodontics

Dr. Campbell is a dentist and an Orthodontic Specialist. This means that he attended a 2.5 year Orthodontic Residency Program in addition to completing 4 years of dental school. He is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and by limiting his practice to the field of Orthodontics, he is able to focus on every detail and aspect of each patient’s treatment.

While it is completely voluntary and not required for practicing orthodontics, Dr. Campbell has completed the rigorous additional study and examinations required to become a board certified orthodontist by the American Board of Orthodontics. He is among a small percentage of orthodontists in the United States to earn this degree of recognized excellence within his specialty. Taking the time and energy to become board certified demonstrates a desire to be held to excellent clinical standards, making your treatment experience one of detailed precision and outstanding results.
